Today is National Threatened Species Day. It’s quite alarming the number of species that are now threatened with extinction in our lifetime. Australia has the highest mammal extinction rate on earth along with one of the highest deforestation rates of any country.
We have driven 29 species to extinction with over 1700 others now threatened with extinction as well.
Habitat destruction from deforestation, urbanisation, pollution, over fishing, roadkills, introduced species, permitted native species culling are having an enormous impact on our biodiversity, environments and wildlife.
44% of our forests have now been cleared and Australia is the only developed nation on the list of deforestation hotspots.
Whether you believe in climate change or not you can’t deny the impact we are currently having on our ecosystems and wildlife through our actions.
Hopefully we live to see a future where these species still exist and aren’t just stories we tell our grandchildren.
