“I think of my work as a catalyst for connection,” says Meghann Riepenhoff. “It is an opportunity to visualise and consider how direct, essential and innate our relationship to our environment is. We are our environment.”
The blue, icy waters of lakes and rivers in North America and Canada writhe and glisten in Riepenhoff’s magical series of semi-abstract cyanotypes, collected in a new book titled Ice. Inspired by Anna Atkins’ work from the British shoreline, Riepenhoff is inspired by the unpredictability of water movement and the environment. Some recent images were also made at the confluence of the Genesee River and Lake Ontario, whose waters were contaminated as a result of Kodak’s production of photographic materials.
