(Wait for it...)This weekend marked the rededication of the burial ground to the enslaved at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate on Juneteenth eve. At the dinner reception, as Annette Gordon-Reed was speaking, the youngest children of the descendants of Jefferson, Hemingses and many others cut loose on the lawn as the grown audience sat rapt listening to a stunning panel discussion between Annette, Darren Walker, Clint Smith, and Andrew Davenport. To see the youngest descendants running around like they knew they had a right to own that place was profound on every level. I took this video to honor Annette and others whose dogged determination in the archives and whose courage helped to make this possible. Salute!
