We caught up with @ryan_mcswain about his new zine, 19–20. Swipe πŸ‘‰πŸΌ to learn about his process and see an except from the work! 19–20 is a collection of photos and writings that explores connections between place and nostalgic memories by documenting ordinary scenes from rural and suburban towns in Arkansas and California. Ryan, how do you select the photos? How do you decide what works? β€œ19β€”20 is a collection of photos I’ve taken from 2019 to 2020 (about 40 rolls of film). I taped all my negatives to my apartment window and tagged images that I liked based on a two-tier color system – green dots for definite yeses and yellow dots for maybes. I then scanned everything and used Adobe InDesign to layout the book. In general, I like to combine photos that complement each other or form a narrative. In addition to that, place is an important part of my work, so I look to connect scenes that were either shot in the same location or contain features that are related to each other.” What do you hope people see in this work? β€œI hope that people are able to connect this work to places they may have seen or experienced in their own lives. I aim to frame scenes in a way that elevates everyday objects, people and places to points of interest with a sense of tangible meaning. Even if people aren’t able to draw any connections, I hope that these images will provoke them to be more introspective and aware of the everyday places they encounter.” Ryan McSwain is a graphic designer and photographer based in Oakland, California.
