This is an old-school selfie taken with my Nikon of my wife Jennifer and me on a safari in East Africa in 1985, three years after we married. This month was the second anniversary of her death from cancer and losing her—and reflecting how she partnered with me to have a family while I was absent so many times on my expeditions, while she had two jobs, one raising the kids and other overseeing Patagonia’s image—made me realize even more the only true mortality is the wisdom any of us can leave behind when our time is up. I end my new memoir Life Lived Wild, that comes out in a month, with my remembrance of Jennifer. @Patagoniabooks
