Follow me for more NYC eats! @tamarindislandnyc offers delicious Guyanese & Trinidadian food! It just opened up this February. READ BELOW 👇 for more info! I recently visited Tamarind Island (📍114-48 Sutphin Blvd, Jamaica, Queens) in South Jamaica. Their owner, Krish, introduced me to a bunch of classic dishes that they make fresh and in-house. First up, their Doubles were delicious! Each one includes two baras that are filled with channa (curried chickpeas), kuchela (a mango-based hot relish), and cucumber, and can be topped with pepper sauce, tamarind sauce, or “everything sauce (a mixture of tamarind and pepper sauce). Next up, their bake and saltfish hit the spot. Tamarind Island’s version is traditional with dried and salted cod and a variety of other flavorful ingredients. The bake was fluffy and had me craving more! between a fluffy bake. Finally, their Guyanese Fried Rice with Jerk Chicken is a splendid example of how different cultures connect through food. I love how Guyanese and Trinidadian cuisine involves so much diversity due to a rich food history.
