Please hold the Sikh community close today. [Trigger Warning] We wake up to the news that a family of four has been found dead in an orchard in Merced, CA. Aroohi Kaur was an eight-month old baby, found with her parents Jasleen Kaur and Jasdeep Singh, and her uncle Amandeep Singh. The family was kidnapped at gunpoint on Monday from their trucking business in California’s Central Valley, not far from where I grew up. We do not yet understand the suspect’s motives (he attempted suicide when in custody). But for now — please light a candle with me. Especially for Baby Aroohi. This family came to California from Punjab a decade ago for their future — for her. There are no comforting words. No greater meaning. Just unspeakable suffering.
