Four students from overseas Commonwealth countries are among a range of participants on The Prince's Foundation's Summer School, which is currently taking place at the charity's @dumfrieshouse headquarters.
Funded by @hamishogstonfdn_ , the students are being tutored in building craft skills and the theory behind design and practice in the conservation of heritage buildings as part of The Prince’s Foundation’s work to support the Commonwealth Heritage Forum and their new Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Commonwealth Heritage Skills Training Programme.
The contingent comprises Abigail Charles from Trinidad and Tobago, Katherine Smith from the British Virgin Islands, Zaryah Harewood from Barbados, and MS Srinivas from India.
Abigail, 33, from San Juan, has earned degrees in architecture and project management and has assisted in church restorations and design and preservation of civic buildings in her home country.
“I’m really enjoying my time on the course, which is so varied,” she said. “My aim here is to try to get hands-on tactile practical experience in the preservation side of things.”
The Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Commonwealth Heritage Skills Training Programme aims to help Commonwealth countries develop the range of specialist skills needed to protect valuable heritage sites. Over an initial five-year period, the programme will build capacity in the Commonwealth by training up to 600 people in a wide range of heritage skills from stonemasonry and joinery to thatching and lime mortar.
