Meet the easy-going Galápagos tortoise, captured beautifully by our friend @sergioizquierdophoto.
Leading an uncomplicated life, these giant tortoises spend their time lounging in the sun, eating plants, and resting up to 16 hours each day, according to National Geographic. They’re key players in shaping healthy ecosystems through grazing and seed dispersal.
Like many wildlife species in the Galápagos Islands, giant tortoises have been impacted by human interference and the introduction of invasive species. The Galápagos Conservancy reports that giant tortoise populations today are at just 10% of their historical numbers and they occupy only 35% of their available habitat.
Teams at the Galápagos Conservancy and the Charles Darwin Research Center work on rewilding and breeding initiatives to restore giant tortoise populations across the Galápagos Islands. Our WildAid marine team has partnered with the government of Ecuador since 2002 to protect the Islands’ rich marine ecosystems and combat wildlife trafficking.
A huge thank you to our friends at @iLCP_photographers and Sergio Izquierdo, iLCP Associate Fellow, for partnering with us to document the work being done to safeguard this biological paradise!
