Presenting UNREAL: A Critical History of Reality TV - a 10-part audio docu-series written and presented by @sirin_kale and I for BBC Radio 4 and exec produced by me. Link in bio to binge the boxset on @bbcsounds now! 📺 To say we have sweated blood, tears and nostalgia over this would be an understatement. Over the last 6 months, Sirin and I have watched hundreds - and hundreds - of hrs of reality TV and interviewed over 60 tv producers, iconic reality stars (did someone say Nasty Nick and Speidi?) and media commentators to trace the arc of the genre from Big Brother to Love Island, with 14 shows in between, including X Factor, What Not To Wear, The Hills, TOWIE, Selling Sunset, the Kardashians and The Real Housewives. (Don’t @ us if we forgot your faves - the struggle to contain this was real.) 📺 We grew up loving reality TV, and we’re fascinated by the way it has influenced fashion, beauty, dating and politics and turned on its head the very idea of fame, launching the idea of the ‘ordinary’ celebrity. It’s also, at times, deliciously and hilariously ridiculous. But we’ve also been increasingly concerned about its ethical blind spots - and what the future of this troubled format might look like. So tune in, to find out! And don’t forget to rate and review us to help other people find us. 📺 UNREAL is produced by Hannah Hufford and edited by James Cook. Additional research by Hannah Robins.
