Grandparents Day is this week, an important moment to celebrate the many roles grandparents play in our families and communities. Good+Foundation takes a multi-generational approach in our work, engaging grandparents and other caregivers for the benefit of children. Fatima is a full-time caregiver to her 2-year-old grandchild who has special needs. When she was first granted full custody of her grandchild, she didn’t have reliable childcare lined up and lost her job. Fatima found a sense of community and critical support when she needed it most through a Good+ program that supports relative caregivers. Fatima’s social worker at the program helped her obtain essential items she’d need to raise a safe, happy toddler. Donations of diapers and wipes were particularly helpful. The program also provided a referral for free, stable childcare, so Fatima was able to return to work. Grandparents can have an immense positive impact on their grandchildren, whether as full-time caregivers or as part of a wider support system.
