In Brussels in 1944, Lee Miller stepped away from reporting on the efforts of the U.S Army, to visit René Magritte, photographed here with his dog LouLou. . Perhaps best known for bowler hats, green apples, and clouds, Magritte managed to transform the mundane and everyday into something strange and fantastical. After an early career as a graphic artist, the Belgian Magritte had his first exhibition in 1926, before moving to Paris to be at the heart of the surrealist movement. . He returned to Brussels in 1930, and remained in the city during the Nazi occupation of Belgium. Lee, writing for Vogue, captured his return to the impressionistic painting style of his early career, describing his work as, ‘like a streaky Renoir with a passion for vari-coloured naked ladies and mystic bouquets.’ .
