Ending this year doing what my Granny asked me for 6 yrs straight! I graduated w/ my Master of Arts in Teaching in 2015. She was so proud of me (the road took a long ahhhh timeee lol) & she asked me to take professional pics over & over to commemorate but I never did. In retrospect, I was beyond proud of finishing but the school I attended wasn’t an illustrious HBCU nor the Ivy League I felt capable. But I was busting my ass working a full time job while in school. Busting my ass working odd jobs on the weekend to get decent pay. I’d be on that three hour drive to classes in Pineville, LA & Granny would get on my phone & say, “Von Von, I’m old enough to remember when Black folk usta couldn’t read! You getting an education from a 4 yr. school for free! Learn to be content no matter the circumstance.” Took me ages to master that. This year, I thought we almost lost Granny to a seizure & she thought we almost lost me, too! So I did this shoot to honor her & gift this on her b’day January 1st!
