Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! TBH, I still have to pause to un-condition my childhood programming of not even wanting to call myself Mexican, because that was the topic of so much teasing I overheard in elementary school in CA. I didn’t really see the version of my aspirations represented to me in the public eye, where were the regal boss types?! (Hope I’m becoming that for other little girls.) My upbringing was a mix of being in & out of my parents Mexican restaurant of 30 years, but also going to Mexico where my family’s particular style of celebration felt almost more European than what I was seeing in the US repping my heritage.
