This June marks 2 years since I started playing bass! Back in 2022, Stock Goblin needed a bassist, so I bought a shitty Ibanez from Facebook Marketplace and spent that summer teaching myself how to play. I never anticipated how much joy this instrument would bring me. I’ve probably put in 1000+ hours at this point, but I wanted to include a (kind of embarrassing/painful to watch 🫣) video of me playing the week I started so I could show how much I’ve improved in 2 years! I don’t have many videos of myself playing but I want to start recording them more :) I’m grateful that there was a lot of skill transfer from my ~18 years of piano experience, but I also totally give credit to myself for how much practice I’ve put in. This year I taught myself how to slap and I’ve been working on a bunch of stylistic techniques (especially funk related ones)! Now that I’m out of school and working full time I can finally start taking bass lessons — had my very first one last week! I’m really looking forward to seeing how much more I’ll improve with some actual guidance 😸🎸 Anyway this is something that’s really important to me so I wanted to make a little post about it. Playing music is the thing that gives me the absolute greatest happiness in life and bass has given me a new way to experience that, especially when playing with others :) I’ve gotten a lot more confident in my playing (and musical ability in general) in the past year so I’m really excited to share where I’m at! 💗
