QUANTUM ONION 🧅 A fun lil project to natural dye @erintarectecan‘s vintage cotton napkins. We made our Forbidden Soup (dye pot) from onion skins and a pinch of turmeric. Amongst three of us stitchers (shoutout to @century.leather.ltd for his handiwork), it took a collective 12 hrs to stitch the classic globe onion and spring onion motifs on six napkins. The onion rings were made with elastic bands - much quicker! - so I was able to teach three different shibori / resist methods. I came up with a way to transfer a shibori dot guideline pattern accurately and repeatedly in a fraction of the time vs measuring for each napkin, shown in the second slide. 🍽️ 🧅 As a reward for our beautiful completed Onion napkin set, Erin treated us to the Quantum Onion dinner: many courses that focused on onions, with a side of onion napkins! A Gibson martini with pickled pearl onion garnish and juice, caramelized onion and shallot tart, beef pho with onion broth, caramelized shallot rosemary shortbread (no photos 😭)… and an off-theme extra special homemade “sticky rice” pu’er tea ice cream. 🤤☕️ It’s a beautiful things when you can combine your talents with friends! Dye chemistry 🤝 Cooking chemistry (same guy 🥸)
