It took more than three decades of organizing to hold R Kelly accountable for his abuse, and after being found guilty of nine counts of racketeering and sexual violence in September of 2021, he has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the decades of violence he enacted on Black women and girls.
As a Black feminist organization, we do not believe longer or harsher carceral punishments necessarily equal justice. However, we believe that survivor justice includes following the lead and honoring the desires of those who have been harmed, and we support the survivors in this case who chose to seek justice through the criminal legal system. We also believe the 30-year sentence given more fully acknowledges the gravity of the violence committed; yet, in the words of GGE CEO & Founder @JoanneN.Smith, “it still doesn’t mean that the world cares that these were Black girls and women whose lives are forever changed.” R Kelly evaded justice and accountability for years and grew to global fame in the process. In his case, and many others, violence against Black girls and women was highly visible and actively ignored. We hope that this ruling marks a turning point in our collective consciousness, and provides some solace for the brave survivors who came forward and shared their stories.
“With every addition of a new victim, you grew in wickedness,” one victim shared during today’s sentencing hearing. “You used your fame and power to groom and coach underage boys and girls for your own sexual gratification.... Today we reclaim our names. We are no longer the preyed-upon individuals we once were. I pray that God reaches your soul.” May the survivors continue their healing journey.
