NEVER LOSE FAITH. There I sat on a lone tree over looking miles of rolling hills as the sun started to creep up and the birds chirping. Gobbles had erupted out of the bottoms to my right, around 13 separate birds I could hear on this property. So I guess you could say my glass was half full. The pair of long beards I had roosted the night before pitched down exactly where I had imagined in my mind. Around 120 yards or so from me. With some aggressive calling I struck up the boss hen and she did a Picket’s charge up the hill toward me, with her followed the two toms and 4 hens accompanying her. I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face as they cleared 100 yards in just seconds toward me. Just as fast as my grin appeared it dissipated as I realized my birds weren’t running toward my decoys, they were running into the field behind me. I raised my gun and as the boss tom ran to keep up with his gal and I just couldn’t squeeze the trigger. Too much uncertainty on the shot. I watched as him, his buddy, and their ladies ran into the wood-line behind me. My adrenaline quickly faded as the birds gobbling got further and quieter. I decided to test my luck and run and gun after some birds that were still gobbling. After a close encounter with no shot and an hour and 45 minutes later walking in the woods, I decided to head out. I realized I had forgot my binoculars by the base of the tree I had originally leaned on in the morning, so I began my trek to retrieve them. As I picked up the binos, I let out a yelp and two toms hammered about 150 yards away. The same two birds that I had set up on in the morning. I quickly sat down and put two decoys out and started calling. They were cutting me off but not closing the gap. I gave them the silent treatment, and curiosity ended up getting the best of them. Two red, white and blue heads popped over the hillside. With 2 minutes of just scanning the field for any predators or anything out of place, the toms came walking in. With two quick shots I capped off one of the most memorable Turkey hunts I’ve had solo. Moral of the story is to never lose faith.
