I deliberated a long time before sharing this video (from the most incredible holiday imaginable @lemeridienmaldives love youuuuuuuu) not because there’s anything wrong with the video HOWEVER right at the end where I am in my bikini , there’s a moment where you can glimpse a string from a sanitary product 😱 (haha I can’t even say tampon lol tampontampontampon) Now when I noticed it, the first thought that raced through my head was Shit !! Thank God I spotted that!! Imagine THE SHAME of posting it, not realising and someone else noticing and knowing I was having my period ! 🩸🩸🩸 My second thought was delete it. My third was HELL NO - post it as is. I honestly felt deep resistance, but I sat with that extreme discomfort, thought about it’s source, and the cultural environment I grew up in and how much that still affects me. That deep down I have been conditioned to see something dirty, wrong and I dunno almost sinful about periods and the fact that anyone might know you were having your period a source of deep embarrassment. Well fuck that ! Where does this belief come from ? And what does it say about ongoing attitudes to women and our bodies in this society.
