Lee published her article ‘Hitleriana’ in British Vogue in July 1945. Following on from her piece ‘Germany—the war that is won’ published in the previous issue (and that we covered last week), this feature gave readers a look into Hitler’s residences in Berchtesgaden and Munich at the end of the War. Lee investigated the properties with US soldier and fellow photojournalist David E. Scherman, taking various photos of both themselves and their surroundings and making themselves at home: “I was living in Hitler’s private apartment in Munich when his death was announced. It was an ordinary semi-corner old-fashioned building on a Platz. The address was 16 Prinzregentenplatz, and there were no signs that anyone more pretentious than merchants or retired clergy had lived there. Now it was obviously a Command Post. The code signs said that it belonged to the 179th Regiment of the 45th Division”. . This Toby jug of King George VI must have been an unexpected find for its new inhabitants. Lee explained its presence to the reader: “He [Hitler] had even introduced this cook to Mr. Chamberlain when they met on the stairs, and their cook had given Mrs. G. the jug made like the head of King George VI which played the national anthem when lifted. Mr. Chamberlain had brought it to Hitler in Nov. ’38... and Hitler had given orders that it should be taken to the air raid shelter during alerts”. . . .
