Not long after Allyson Felix retired from running, she got a phone call from track coach Bob Kersee asking for a favor: Could she compete in a 4×400 relay to help the United States women’s team qualify for the world championships? “I didn’t really believe it,” Felix, 36, recalls. “But then things just clicked back into the mode of go time.” In July, she and the team made the cut, and later that month, she ran in the championships. With the worlds behind her, Felix, who holds more medals than any American track-and-field athlete in history, insists her exit is real this time.
