'Saturday', 2022. Part of seven watercolours in a series.
Named for the days of the week, these seven watercolours continue Olafur’s investigation of colour phenomena, a central concern for much of his work across all media, from large-scale installations to photographic series, sculptures, and light projections. His watercolour paintings invariably feature circles or ellipses that give the impression of depth, duration, and movement. In contrast to earlier works that featured complex arrays of overlapping circles and ellipses, these recent, more minimalist paintings are dominated by large central circles. Despite the paintings’ reduced palettes, a broad range of colours is created through applying successive layers of paint on the paper. Where there are gaps between layers, surprising hues spring forth. For this particular series, Olafur employed a range of techniques explored in his previous watercolours, including, among other things, allowing melting ice to create chance compositions.
