Collaborations have unique character and set of challenges. Learn how @driftlessmoto, @glennsines, @wyattonfilm, and @jhbphoto created a zine together. IN MEMORIAM : Backroads of the Midwest. A collection of midwest inspired work by four rural photographers spanning from Minnesota to Wisconsin to Illinois. Cody, How did this project come to be? “Glenn Sines came to me with the idea, which was ironic because I had been thinking about asking him to collaborate on something as well! I immediately pictured the layout for the cover design so it made sense to have four photographers involved, to both showcase their work individually and to create a collaboration under a theme. I invited Justin Beck and Jr Wyatt to join in, making it four of us coming together for a collective rural midwest-based project.” How did you go about selecting the photos to be included? “As designer for the zine I took the reins on keeping the project organized. Each photographer self-curated what they thought were their ten best images shot over the summer. I created spreads based on matching locations when applicable and what looked good to my eye.” What did you learn along the way? “It was the first time I’d printed my work intentionally, so before opening it for distribution, each of us ordered a preliminary copy of the zine. I ended up making some small changes for the final draft... just things you can't predict for in the printing process.” What do you hope people see in this work? “I hope people look at the body of work and see more than just beauty in the banal, but a tribute to the lost or soon to be forgotten relics that can be found in small towns and on the backroads of the midwest. Whether it's an old gas station or a long lived family farmstead, there are so many things worth capturing before they are gone and just memories.” Thanks for sharing, Cody!
