Dying a little, posting this. That girl. That lost girl. Her name was Dani York because Shapiro sounded too Semitic, I was told, and I didn’t look the part. Oh, irony of ironies. I was lost to myself, age twenty-three, the same age my son @j_maren just turned. My interior life was unavailable to me. My father was about to die in a car crash. My mother nearly died too. I would turn my life around, stop thinking my outer shell was all I had. I would return to @sarahlawrencecollege where I would meet professors who would change my life. All this was ahead of me.
