We’re continuing our look at Lee’s article ‘Hitleriana’ with this image of US artillery soldiers and German prisoners in Prinzregentenplatz, Munich, 1945. . Throughout her journalistic career, Lee always made her views on the War clear. The following passage is indicative of what many allied soldiers must have felt when stationed in Germany at the end of the conflict: “Hitler had never been here during a raid, and in fact had only been in Munich for seven visits after the war started to go badly. The attitude of these Germans was odd. They talked quite normally about Hess, for instance, being one of the finest men in the world.... and that Hitler was a great man with the right ideas, but he had been badly advised and controlled by gangsters. No Germans, unless they are underground workers or concentration camp inmates, find that Hitler did anything wrong except to lose. They put it very simply... “He should have made peace when the Russian war went bad.” I don’t think they’ll ever learn... and I know that I will never understand them ... I’m just like the soldiers, here, who look at the beautiful countryside, use the super modern comforts of their buildings and wonder why they wanted anything more”. . Following occupation, Germany underwent drastic changes to its government and composition as many of the territories annexed by the Nazis were returned to their respective countries by the three allied powers: The United States, United Kingdom, and Soviet Union. . . .
