Many of you know that when the war began, @alexeykatshair and I decided to start a non-profit with the hopes of providing aid for those impacted by this war. For two months, it was all that consumed me and my existence. I was awaiting to graduate in order to spent time in Poland and volunteer over the summer. Then, I paid 3 months of rent in advance and wanted to go further into Ukraine. After meeting many amazing people, I was given the opportunity to go into Ukraine while still volunteering in the process. This process involved traveling with aid and getting it across the border.
I want to share this experience with you.
A group of 3 volunteers, myself included, flew from USA to Poland with 52 suitcases filled with aid.
To be honest, I don’t even remember all the events that led up to being at the airport in Poland for 8 hours and having to put little seals on all of our suitcases after 7 hours of paperwork, processing and waiting.
After we were let out, we came across some unhappy police who decided to ticket us for standing in the most perfect stop to pack up the vans with suitcases(:
We spent the night in a hotel and in the morning at 11 am we were on our way to the Polish/Ukrainian border.
In the 7th video, we approached the border and first were told to wait in the 2/3 day line... even after explaining that we had aid. Some were in line with aid while others were going back home.
After realizing we might be stuck for a while, we decided to turn around and get food. That’s where you see in the 8th video @arsendrobakha on the phone and the polish border is riiiiight behind him as we face the opposite direction.
After 13 hours and lots and lots of events that happened in between - some of which I simply can’t remember and others won’t share - we were put into the truck lane (9th video) and after another hour, we crossed the border into Ukraine (10th video).
We got to Lviv at 5:30 am the next day.
I remember telling Arsen how beautiful the city architecture was. The minute of stepping foot on the ground, there was a noise that both of us have never heard before. At the time we didn’t know that it was the sound of missiles falling.
