On the same day it is revealed the cops and murderers of Breonna Taylor will be charged for her death - finally, two and a half years later - we shortly recieved the news of Brittney Griner’s sentencing. There is no real justice for Black women. We inhale and hold our breath for so long, and as we’re about to exhale a sigh of relief, we’re reminded why we were holding our breath for so long. We stand in solidarity today, over the past 6 months of her detainment, and always with Brittney Griner, her wife Cherelle Griner, her mother, her children, and her whole family. Today, we all witnessed an egregious miscarriage of justice as an innocent Black woman and a 2x Olympic gold medalist was sentenced to 9.5 years in a Russian penal colony (which is inherently slave labor) and a $16,590 fine for less than 1 gram of weed oil in a vape pen. “I made an honest mistake....and had no intent to break Russian laws.” Brittney Griner is a tall, masculine-presenting, queer Black woman and we would be remiss to believe her identities bore no weight on her conviction. Brittney Griner should have never had to play basketball in Russia to achieve pay equity, and she should not be charged and held as a political prisoner. Brittney Griner deserves more from the U.S government in efforts to bring her home.
