Rarely (if ever) can I recall watching on screen such a candid depiction of a woman in her early 60s wrestling with the internalized and often conflicting perspectives of shame, morality, body image, desire, menopause, exploration, the healing power of sex and so many other layered human experiences (that may disproportionately impact women). Ms. Thompson depicts the character (a 60-something year old retired teacher who hires a gorgeous, much younger male sex worker) with humor, candor and disarming vulnerability. Her decision to disrobe (i.e. get completely naked physically and metaphorically without enhancement, effects, or stand-ins) and look at her reflection with acceptance is both refreshing and courageous. The reveal is in no way sensational or gratuitous. Rather, it’s a pure act of self-discovery and self-acceptance that leaves viewers admiring her bravery while pondering their own.
