The sixth member of the so-called Central Park Five has been exonerated, 20 years after the other men had their convictions overturned.⁣ ⁣ Steven Lopez and five other Black and brown teens were falsely charged in 1989 for raping a jogger in Central Park. In exchange for a shorter sentence, Lopez pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of robbing a jogger that same night. His indictment was dismissed and his conviction thrown out on the basis that his confession was false.⁣ ⁣ The police, who held Lopez in a holding cell for 20 hours before questioning him, had no forensic evidence linking him to either crime.
