Ce dont j’avais le plus besoin, c’était de voyager pour prendre des photos [...]." - Josef Koudelka, 2001 En 1970, Josef Koudelka est forcé de vivre un exil politique après avoir documenté l'invasion soviétique de Prague en 1968. Pour parcourir l'Europe et photographier sans s’encombrer, il adopte la vie d’un ascète nomade et voyage avec le minimum. De ces pérégrinations naîtra le projet "Exils" (1968-1994), dans lequel Josef Koudelka réussit parfaitement à transposer une expérience personnelle individuelle en une déclaration existentialiste de portée beaucoup plus universelle sur ce que signifie être une créature foulant cette terre. What I needed most was to travel so that I could take photographs [...]." - Josef Koudelka, 2001 After Koudelka realized in 1970 that he had to leave his country, the experience of exile became an existentially inspired influence on his work. In order to be able to travel and photograph without taking on commissions, he adopted the life of a nomadic ascetic and traveled with the bare minimum. From these wanderings was born the project "Exiles" (1968-1994), in which Koudelka perfectly managed to transpose an individual personal experience to a much more universal existentialist statement about what it means to be a creature walking this earth.
