We finish the year with the Portrait Issue, launching today. We do this with a very special cover by Sasha Huber, whose work Tailoring Freedom is currently on show at @autographabp in London. The Swiss-Haitian artist has used metal staples to adorn the images of Jack and Drana, first taken in 1850, in attire inspired by the clothing worn by well-known abolitionists at the time. This act of redressing seeks to heal colonial wounds. Our main features explore the ethics and history of the portrait and the manifestation of the self in photography. These include new works by Kalpesh Lathigra, Eva O’Leary, Aneesa Dawoojee, Jialin Yan, Genesis Báez and Anne Vetter. Elsewhere, we visit Neo Matloga’s studio in Amsterdam and find out about the censorship challenges faced by the photography community in Vietnam.
