Signed photograph of Mussolini in Hitler's apartment, 1945. . Continuing on from yesterday, Lee planted some not-so-subtle jibes towards Hitler and the Third Reich though out her article, which included this commentary on the leader’s artistic tastes: “To the left of the public rooms was a library—full of rickly bound books and many presentation volumes of signatures and well wishes. The library was un-interesting in that everything of personal value had been evacuated: empty shelves were bleak spoors of flight. Several uniforms (probably being submitted for approval, because they don’t appear in any catalogue of recognized heraldry as yet) were lying in a heap. . Directly adjoining those double doors was the nook in which all Hitler’s Munich conferences were held. Chamberlain sat here... and Franco ... Mussolini, Goebbels, Goering ... Laval ... the whole host of names for the reckoning which will never catch up with them. The book case which jutted out in the room has as savage an angle as the swastika itself. The art work—sculpture still wearing, on a string, prize-medals from exhibitions—was mediocre as were the paintings on all the walls”. . Whilst the ridicule of Hitler’s artistic credentials is commonplace, Lee’s critique as an associate of the surrealist movement is particularly poignant as it shows her hatred of the dictator’s attempts to influence one of her life’s passions. . . .
