“New York: 1962–1964,” the latest exhibition at The Jewish Museum, resulted from a sprawling collaboration between 2x4, the late Germano Celant, Studio Celant in Milan, Selldorf Architects, The Jewish Museum director Claudia Gould, and curators Darsie Alexander, Sam Sackeroff, and Kristina Parsons. The show charts the intertwining of art, politics, media, and popular culture in the three-year period leading up to Robert Rauchenberg winning the International Grand Prize in Painting at the Venice Biennale in ’64. We started in early 2020, just before Germano died later that Spring, so it became an especially poignant project wherein we tried to both channel and honor his original concept while forging a path forward that reflected the overlapping desires of the coterie of inspired partners. We developed the exhibition branding, environmental graphic design, and a super-intricate 344 page book to accompany the show. In many ways “New York: 1962–1964” embodies the Celant method, where line between work and context is blurred and art is framed by the world from which it emerges. The catalogue includes our introductory essay (see link in bio) that attempts to deconstruct that method in detail.
