Within the past 48 hours, I’ve had friends (both in America and elsewhere) share the abuse they’ve copped for speaking out in solidarity with people in the US, read horrifying and hopeless accounts of American women who have had their basic human rights ripped from them overnight and been astounded by the blunt and cruel nature of online commentary. It makes me sick to think that in 2022, expressing support for safe access to a medical procedure can lead to threats, intimidation, harassment and violent online abuse. You might be wondering how a piece that discusses a new social media app and the Miu Miu belt skirt possibly relates to abortion access in the US. Sunroom addresses the mundane and detrimental reality that whether online or in the real world, women, trans and non-binary people will still be subject to cruelty, merely for existing in their bodies. Or sharing their views. Or doing something that will improve their wellbeing and is vital for their safety — and having the strength and generosity to share that experience so that someone else won’t feel so alone. It gives me hope to know that people are there to consistently fight for the right to exist in both digital and physical spaces in harmony.
