The day Billy was born was to be his last. The year was 2009, and dairy prices were taking a huge hit. And calves, especially males, were not bringing in money at auction. In addition to being male, rendering Billy “useless” by dairy industry standards, he was also very tiny at birth, which gave him no “monetary value” to the farmer. Because of this, the farmer thought the next best step was to hit him in the head with a sledgehammer. Thankfully, a kind friend named Larry intervened and brought the calf home — he couldn’t bear to witness Billy’s death. Larry selflessly provided care for Billy for six months despite limited resources. During this time, the pair formed a strong bond — but a friend became concerned that Larry couldn’t continue to care for Billy and reached out to us for help. Thirteen years later, Billy is a relaxed steer who is happy to be with his herd. We’re forever grateful to Larry, whose kindness saved a life — a life that is now valued simply for who he is, not what he can produce.
