When I first got obsessed with climbing while in high school in the mid-60s, I couldn’t find anybody to climb with. I bought an ice ax, crampons and an instruction book and tried to teach myself. My mother freaked, and as a high school graduation present, she sent me to Outward Bound. That’s me on the right, on the summit of the South Sister in the Oregon Cascades, at the end of my course. I wrote this story in an earlier edition of my new memoir, Life Lived Wild. It got cut from the final edition, but it’s a good story, and if you liked my book you might like to check it out on my website, where I just posted it. I’m going to start posting stories that didn’t make it into the book, and while I’m not sure of the cadence, I’ll let you know on Instagram when a new one goes live. Happy Holidays! @PatagoniaBooks. #LifeLivedWildBook
