Eight years have passed since Mike Brown was shot and killed by a police officer named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. For at least four hours, his lifeless body lay in the middle of Canfield Drive. In the aftermath, people took to the streets of Ferguson for over 400 days.
“Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” became a battle cry, and as folks connected across the country, protests in solidarity erupted. The state-sanctioned violence Mike Brown faced exemplifies how policing continuously impacts our communities negatively.
In the months after Mike Brown’s death ignited the streets, the Movement for Black Lives was born from a conversation on how to address police brutality. Today, the organizations within our ecosystem are working to weaken and abolish the carceral state, and our movement has momentum in the streets and beyond.
Mike, we are working for a future that won’t have state-sanctioned violence, a future where our people can thrive and grow old, and a future where your legacy is alive and well through the work we put in to dismantle anti-Black racism. Rest in Peace and Power, Mike Brown.
