So pleased to share installation images of my new site-specific commission ✨Scratching the Surface✨ which opens to the public tomorrow Feb 10th at @bloomberg #BloombergSpace above the incredible London #mithraeum 🏺🙌, and runs until the 22nd of July. With special thanks to Nancy Rosen, @hchiles76 , Jemma Read, Henry Coleman and Priscilla Mulenga 🙏 - Situated directly above the Roman Temple of Mithras, originally discovered on this site in 1954, Fernando Casasempere’s #ScratchingtheSurface appears to meld with the #gallery space, exploring the ways in which new #layers can change the surfaces around us and transport the #past into the #present. Casasempere's large-scale #ceramic elements connect the #archaeological site with the space of the imagination, welcoming multiple narratives and interpretations. A sprawling ceramic form fills a corner of the space. It echoes the textures and layers of the sculptures displayed on the industrial conveyor belt, which is reminiscent of archaeological excavations and invites you to view the work from different angles. Casasempere’s enduring interest in archaeology as a means of deciphering memories and accessing the past, both #ecological and #historical, is a fundamental source of inspiration for his practice. Just as previous layers of paint and wallpaper on the walls around us attest to the indelible traces left behind by our predecessors, Scratching the Surface aims to reflect how our presence continuously shapes future archaeology.
