I used to share about our autism journey much more in the beginning, because connecting with other parents brought me comfort and gave me hope. Now, with Luca in first grade, l've been reflecting on just how far he's come. He does things now that I once questioned if he ever would. l've realized he is so capable, his brain is simply wired differently. With the right support, he finds his own way to shine. Recently, he scored in the 95th percentile on his grade level testing. I was overcome with emotion, remembering the days I wondered if he would ever talk, let alone read, write, and thrive at school like his peers. If I could, l'd go back and hug that version of myself...the mom who was scared and full of questions and remind her that while the journey isn't always easy, it's filled with incredible victories and joy along the way. To the mom just starting this path know that every autism journey is different, but there is so much beauty to be found in the little things. You and your child will write your own story and it will be a good one.
