OK UPDATE!!! I am being told that this man is not a judge, but a mayor. Many are advising that his speech is actually a scare tactic to cause franticism about a new law that disables judges to hold people of color in jail without a prompt trial simply because they don’t have the cash for bail. Apparently his rhetoric is the antithesis of what the new law is actually about. Still researching on my own. The new SAFE-T act in Illinois is actually a long coming response to the amount of black and brown people that have been arrested and charged with crimes but could not post bail, therefore they have been held in jails for YEARS. I never knew that Rykers and Cook County jails were actually pre-trial detention centers. There are people who have been sitting in there for years without a trial and without being able to afford bail.
