CALL TO ACTION ❗️
Today is #WorldOceansDay, and the concept behind this date is to unite ocean action worldwide. We have a lot to thank the ocean for, such as — our entire existence.
Marine life, especially keystone species, such as all the target sharks of the NSW Shark Management Program keep our ocean in balance and are essential to maintaining its health. In addition, all of the animals caught in this Program, play an important role in the marine ecosystem.
In recent years, we have seen public sentiment towards the non-lethal aspects of this Program drop dramatically. This has resulted in increased state budgets towards non-lethal alternatives for shark ‘management’ such as drone trials.
NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY!
“The NSW Government has invested over $85 million until 2026 to roll out successfully trialled technologies along the NSW coastline including drone aerial surveillance, SMART (Shark-Management-Alert-in-Real-Time) drumlines and satellite-linked VR4G listening stations to detect and track tagged sharks in real-time, issuing alerts to the public and beach authorities via Twitter and a SharkSmart App.
We want to understand Coastal Councils, stakeholders and community members sentiments about the current shark mitigation approaches in NSW, and specifically your confidence in the current Program to reduce the risk of human-shark interactions.
Please take 10 minutes to share your views to contribute to future decision making about shark mitigation in your region.
The survey is open until Thursday 16 June 2022.” @nsw_dpi @nsw_sharksmart
Please tag all ocean goers you know on this post, and share the Survey link! This is how you can directly impact decision making and help us see positive changes!
