'Return to Mexico: Journeys Beyond the Mask' (1992) by @abbas.photos A photographic record of his nine journeys to Mexico during the 1980s, Abbas' book 'Return to Mexico' captured a cultural landscape torn between ancient traditions and contemporary society. In Mexico – a country that was brutally conquered and then learned to mask its own culture – Abbas photographed as if writing a novel and kept a journal as if taking snapshots. Through his photographs and excerpts from his daily journal, Abbas poignantly conveyed the effect of Mexico's transition into a modern state, and also suggested the causes in their historical perspective. PHOTOS (left to right): (1) Pilgrimage at a Catholic shrine.
