It’s funny how things happen. I’m working on a project about #MariaTallchief, the first #Native prima ballerina (more on that later) & so I decided to visit the town where she was born since I was in Oklahoma anyway. I took Will to see the theater that her father built to help lift the spirits of a demoralized people during the so-called #Osage “Reign of Terror.” (See #killersoftheflowermoon) We then visited a nearby cafe, Treats, to grab some snacks on our way to OKC. Turns out, I met the owners, who are trying to restore the Tall Chief Theater. One of the owners, who is Osage, drove us to Maria Tallchief’s grave, her family’s dilapidated mansion that the tribe and her family want to restore, and let us see inside that old theater. Wow, could it be beautiful. And hearing his stories ... the #Osage have gone through some disturbing sh*t, to put it mildly. While much of the Scorsese movie was filmed in nearby #Pawhuska, Fairfax was where a lot of the horrors took place (& where many of those people were located). The last pic is one you might see in the movie. The names on the windows, which refer to real people who used to occupy those spaces, were placed by the film crew. Anyway, would love to see that theater shine again. ✨ #savethetallchief #nativeamerican #native #americanindian #indigenous #martinscorsese #davidgrann @appletvplus @paramountco @wonderymedia
