“take notice of what light does - to everything”. - tess guinery
walking into a dark room after being outside in the bright summer sunshine can be temporarily blinding. the instant transition between the light outside you were just used to and the sudden lack of light in this room is similar to when you first turn your bedroom lights off at night. you can’t see anything. but the longer you sit in that darkness, the more your eyes will adjust, and you may find a false sense of security in being able to see on your own. but the truth is no amount of dark adaptation from your eyes can compare to true, authentic light. and while you may find that the darkness is tolerable for you, if you want to invite others into your dark room it’s only a matter of time before one walks in and points out, i can’t see, why is it so dark in here? where is light?
but darkness is not a permanent state, it is a temporary condition. darkness is simply the absence of light. it holds no power. when light shines in the darkness, the darkness can never overcome it. we weren’t designed for darkness. we were created for light, in light. we thrive in light. we’re healed in light. when we live in the light, we are untouchable, we are protected. while exposing our darkness to light might make us feel vulnerable, the book of romans teaches us that we are vulnerable without it, referring to light as an armor to put on. “...let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” (romans 13:12). light is not the punishment, it is the solution.
