What practices of caring for oneself and others do people develop in order to protect themselves? What role does public space play in this? These are some of the questions artist Cornelia Herfurtner raises through her practice. Utilizing mainly wood, Herfurtner’s work often portrays everyday objects on portable shields. She draws inspiration from the legal history of West Germany, where these items were negotiated as purported defensive weapons. Herfurtner has continued to work on her long-term project "What is a weapon?" during her time at ISCP, in which she examines the practices that people and social movements develop in order to protect themselves in public. Cornelia Herfurtner is one of many ISCP artists-in-residence you can meet during Fall Open Studios! Visit her studio to see these wooden pieces in person. 🗓 Opening Reception: Friday, November 18, 6-9pm 🕒 Open Hours: Saturday, November 19, 1-7pm 📍Location: 1040 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn • • • #iscpfallopenstudios #iscplife #artistinresidency #internationalresidency #iscpresidency #nycartists #nycart #senatedepartmentforcultureandeurope
