At Party with Ginger we are deeply saddened that the World Cup football tournament will be taking place in Qatar this year– a country where homosexuality is a crime, and can be punishable by death. Homosexuality is still a taboo subject in men's football, even in the UK, where gay men still fear to ‘come out’. Despite any campaigning for LGBT+ equality in UK football, awarding Qatar with this event is a gargantuan step back. Women's football is coming further to the forefront in the UK, while women in Qatar are still under male guardianship. To position the World Cup in Qatar only speaks to align with these outdated and inhumane values. To place the World Cup in a country where some sections of society can not exist peacefully is saddening and harmful. We will be standing by our allies by not engaging with the World Cup this year.
