This has to be one of the coolest projects I have been involved in! @levis came to me with the opportunity to create a custom piece that embraces my heritage and tells the story of my journey. On the back of the jacket, you’ll notice 5 hands, the hands on the top are the 3 women in my life who inspired me to cook - my mom, my grandma (holding sazon) and my auntie. My hands are on the bottom and it represents the culmination last Thanksgiving when we all cooked together for the first time ever. It was a moment that I’ll never forget - when everything came full circle. To the sides are the skyline of NYC and the Oak tree which represents my journey from the east coast to the west coast. Above it is the quote “Always move forward, but always look back to celebrate the past” which is my mantra to keep me motivated. On the pocket is a picture of the sankofa, the African crane, which depicts my mantra with the head looking back and feet pointing forward. On the top of the sleeves are the @sobremesaoak and @alamaroakland logos. And at the bottom of the sleeve is “love, culture, power” which I adopted from @latinocommfdn @levis has a special place in my heart because I grew up wearing @levis and to me, it was a symbol of assimilation into the American culture.
