Rolling Stone did a profile on me in the 80s called The Real Indiana Jones, and I’ve been living that down ever since. But I did have a real Indiana Jones experience in the 60s when I was a student in Mexico City and joined an archeology team excavating downtown during construction of the Metro. One day we exposed a “box” made of fitted stones a meter square and removing the top block the head archeologist poked his head in with a flashlight then looked up with a big grin. Inside were two balls the size of grapefruit, one of black obsidian and other of white quartz, each surrounded by jade figurines. It was an offering to the God of Pelota, the sacred Aztec ball game. 40 years later I visited the Museo de Antropologia in Mexico City, and there in a glass display were the artifacts from my Indiana Jones moment. The original version of my recently published memoir Life Lived Wild included this story, but it hit the editor’s floor. I posted it last week on my website, in case you’ve read the book and want to check it out. Photo: Alex Perry. @PatagoniaBooks. #LifeLivedWildBook
