I used to think of the Appalachian mountains as inferior to the "great" mountains of the American West like the Rockies. Then I leaned the Appalachian range are the oldest mountains in the country. They are like grandmother mountains who know us better than we know ourselves and wrap us in the warm blanket of knowing.
