What do you do when a 3 ton juvenile whale shark comes to play with your dive group...? You let it do whatever it wants. šŸ˜‚ Happy International Whale Shark Day!! *shot by me in @tubbatahareefs a few years ago when diving with @wwfphilippines . The Whale Shark (locally called Butanding) is the largest fish (not a whale) in the ocean and can grow to the size of a school bus and weigh over 20 tons when fully matured. They are filter feeders of plankton and tiny shrimp, have only tiny ā€œteethā€ and pose no threat to humans at all. The best place to see them (responsibly) is in Donsol, Sorsogon from November-May (please don’t visit the ā€œotherā€ place near cebu where they feed them as it severely impacts their migratory, mating and dietary habits). This juvenile was extremely curious and stayed around swimming through and exploring our dive group for 20-30 minutes until we swam away to continue our dive. A truly magical encounter I’ll not soon forget... If you’d like to help whale sharks and other types of sharks, pls support conservation efforts and also stay away from restaurants serving sharks fin soup or businesses that deal with sharks fin. Can you imagine people kill this majestic creature just for its fins? Definitely not something we want to support. ;) Go to @wwfphilippines for more info about whale sharks in the Philippines. ;) (Shot on @goproph Hero 7) #whaleshark #internationalwhalesharkday #wwfphilippines #tubbataha #itsmorefuninthephilippines #scubadiving
